Experienced Federal Criminal Defense Attorney in Portland, Oregon
My clients, friends, and colleagues call me Tex. I’m originally from Fort Worth, Texas. I have represented people under investigation or charged with crimes for nearly three decades, my entire legal career.
Solving federal criminal problems, and getting clients through a federal investigation and the court process that follows, is the core of my practice.
The first client I represented at trial was acquitted. I have carried that early momentum and tenacious mentality forward in facing down the federal government on behalf of my clients. I have gotten investigations dropped, cases dismissed and sentences reduced. I have tried a federal case resulting in a not guilty jury verdict and walked my client out the front door. I handled two cases in the National Registry of Exonerations for clients who were wrongfully convicted of homicide charges. See selected results.
My practice focuses on federal narcotics cases, including multi-defendant drug conspiracies, and on fraud and other complex, document-heavy prosecutions. I also handle cases involving digital privacy and government surveillance, protest and activist arrests, and immigration enforcement. I take both retained cases and Criminal Justice Act appointments. Because I've handled hundreds of cases in Oregon’s Federal District Court, I'm familiar with the federal judges, prosecutors and probation officers. I have experience negotiating with specific federal prosecutors on a wide variety of federal matters.
In addition to work for my clients, I frequently speak at training events for criminal defense teams. Some recent topics include negotiating with prosecutors, digital privacy and sentencing preparation. I blog about strategies for federal criminal defense work on the CJA Ringleader substack.
I believe in obtaining the best possible result based on the circumstances of each client. Every case is unique and my past results do not guarantee how your case will resolve.
